This in turn helps to open the hips? more effectively. When the arms are lifted up in downward dog, it allows the spine to lengthen more freely, the lower back to curve inward so the thighbones can move into the back of the body and come deeper in the hip joint, which will help open the hips more. Not many yoga (or flexibility) teachers emphasise the support aspect of muscles. This is probably because it probably is not talked about that? much and they see the final pose in books or already accomplished masters and think that it is simply enough to mimic any fully "relaxed" position using basic principles.
However, assuming you did not start as a baby, there was a journey to get to that pose and it is different for all. Esther's videos show that well:)

You can also think of the usage as encompassing the entire movement series, i.e. preparing for yoga.

@nmotanya How is this sexualized? She's doing yoga for God's sake. I didn't know yoga was sexual all of a sudden. If you can't handle a woman in her underwear, then don't watch it if it bugs you so much. If you've ever done yoga, it's easier to stay focused when you don't have a shirt flipping every two seconds.
